Cooper8 Ltd were asked to assist in the design of a unique Jamaican Restaurant and Takeaway in Brixton’s bustling Electric Avenue.

Design Summary

The Client already had a successful kiosk operation near the station and was eager to expand his operation into the busy market area and into an A3 premises that had become available.

Healthy Eaters was the branding that conveyed the nutritious food on offer. The facility needed to provide for a busy takeaway trade whilst also offering a quiet seated area downstairs and a bakery display for various breads and Jamaican patties. This was supported by a small production kitchen with Jerk Chicken Chargrill that needed additional overhang on the canopy to capture the smoke from the hot coals.

We discussed in detail the Clients operation and interpreted his ideas through a series of sketch designs and meetings .We then progressed these to full CAD services drawings and elevations after surveying the relevant areas.

This was followed by specifying equipment and budget costing.

Healthy Eaters opened at the end of August 2009 as planned. And is a successful operation run by a dynamic and motivated team.

Electric Avenue

Electric Avenue is a street in Brixton, London. Built in the 1880s, it was the first market street to be lit by electricity. Today, the street contains several butchers and fish mongers and hosts a part of Brixton Market, which specializes in selling a mix of African, Caribbean, and Portuguese products. It is located just round the corner from Brixton tube station (1972). The elegant Victorian canopies over the pavements survived until the 1980s.

The road gave its name to Eddy Grant's 1982 single "Electric Avenue", which reached number 2 on both the UK and U.S. singles charts
